K-5 Curriculum

Math and English Language Arts/Literacy (ELA)

In order to achieve the Common Core State Standards, DCPS adopted the Eureka math curriculum and developed its own curriculum for ELA. DCPS provides families with curriculum guides for a high-level understanding of the thematic literacy units used throughout the District. Find them here.

For additional resources on the Eureka Math curriculum used in all DCPS K-5 classrooms, these Common Core aligned roadmaps will further assist parents in supporting their child with Math related content.

Social-Emotional Curriculum

Marie Reed has implemented Second Step as its Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum. SEL helps children gain confidence, set goals, make better decisions, collaborate with others, and navigate their worlds more effectively. Additionally, Marie Reed utilizes Conscious Discipline as a philosophy/approach to promote a positive school culture. Students begin each day building their classroom community, or sometimes as a whole-school group. Teachers are conscientious about seizing every teachable moment, teaching students to self-regulate positive behavior rather than looking to adults for warnings and consequences. As a result, students spend much more time thinking about how to make Marie Reed a better place so they don’t have to invest their energy in “staying out of trouble.” Our rare disciplinary issues are typically handled by the teacher, and simply consist of finding a logical, empowering way for students to make amends for errors.
